That little capsule bio that I wrote says I’m not a writer and it’s true. I never expected to write a book that anyone would want to publish. I’d write some things now and then, but never like that.

 

Then one day I read a book and it irritated me. Which happens. But this time there was enough grit in the oyster that I sat down and started writing a response. And it just kept coming. Somehow that initial impulse stayed with me, and I kept getting ideas for how to flesh it out. Then the editing. I showed the story to some friends, and they helped me immensely, telling me to change those parts that would only embarrass me.

 

Still more editing. I can’t count how many times I’ve read the story through, or how many hours it took, or how many changes I made. Many.

 

No doubt, a major factor in this process was that this is a story that I care about. But the reason I’m writing this explication here and now is to say that if I could do this, then so could anyone else. So could you. If you stumble onto a story that you care about enough to sustain a few years of writing and editing, then you will likely end up with a story that people want to read.
